Every week or so, Phil Mickelson seems to find himself embroiled in yet another controversy. Now, it appears as though the PGA golfer has found himself in another one—his presumed relationship with a veteran sports journalist.
When Phil Mickelson tore up the course at the Masters last weekend, it sparked all manner of controversy—just not for the reasons you might think. The supposedly “gentlemanly” golfer was caught on camera ripping off his shirt and showering in the middle of his round, but Mickelson insists he only did that because he was hot out there—not because of any ongoing feud with his peers.
Former U.S. Open champion Phil Mickelson took to Twitter to express his thoughts on two recent national sports scandals. He first shared his thoughts on disgraced former NFL running back Ray Rice, who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL. Mickelson wrote that the league’s decision to suspend Rice was a “miracle,” since it was Rice’s second domestic violence incident. He then shared his thoughts on NBA player J.R. Smith, who was recently suspended for shooting an arrow into a fan who was heckling him. Mickelson wrote that it was unfortunate Smith’s outburst was caught on camera, since he always wanted to be remembered as a good person.
Phil Mickelson’s early leadership has helped him win his share of PGA Tour events over the years. Intervening in the case two years ago saved one of the biggest names in golf from months of headlines about one of the country’s biggest sports and science scandals in decades. Mickelson cleverly shared information that might not have surfaced otherwise. By doing so, he made it clear that he had nothing to hide and saved himself endless interrogations in case the journalists got hold of the information themselves.

Two days after the allegations, Mickelson played a 2over 74 at The Players tournament and then tweeted : Our family, like thousands of others, turned to Rick Singer’s firm to guide us through the college admissions process. We are shocked by the revelations of these events. Of course we had nothing to do with this deception, our children would have disowned us if we had tried to intervene. This is a curious revelation because Michelson and his wife Amy have not been charged and are not even mentioned in the accompanying documents. Working with Singer seemed to be a problem. The Mickelsons’ hunch, however, proved to be correct. According to SportsbyBrooks.com, there was a note on the home page of a website that supported Singer, but which was shut down after the indictment, in which Mickelson praised Singer’s help. The report states that his daughter Amanda had been admitted to Brown University, a school not included in the investigation.
The size of the scandal was considerable

However, it was the colleges and universities that suffered the most, with some of them being cheated by their own coaches. Half of the scandals involved Singer taking entrance exams for students. Another part of the plan was the creation of fake sports resumes, with parents going so far as to photoshop their children into photos to make it look like they were playing sports. According to NBC News, Loughlin held a photo shoot where her daughter was the coxswain of the rowing team. Singer struck deals with college coaches to recruit students as undergraduates or athletes, allowing them to bypass certain admission requirements. After registering and arriving on campus, athletes feigned injuries or personal problems to leave their teams before it was clear they were not allowed to play. Georgetown tennis, UCLA men’s soccer, UCLA and Yale women’s soccer, and Wake Forest volleyball were among the programs studied. On the same day that the Justice Department announced the investigation and charges, Singer pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, and obstruction of justice, among other charges.
