Eel Pie Island may be unfamiliar to you, yet it’s a fascinating part of London.
The mudflat at Twickenham, right in the middle of the River Thames, was once recognized as a hotbed of British rock and roll, with everyone from The Who to Pink Floyd performing there.
The tract of property was all about Eel Pie Island Hotel in the swinging sixties, a lively hangout for all the musicians and cool folks.
Unfortunately, the structure fell into disrepair and burned destroyed in 1971, putting an end to what had once been a landmark.
Eel Pie Island, on the other hand, did not perish with it, instead attracting a new population of artists and creatives.
These days, a visit to the island during its regular Open Studios event will see ceramics, sculpture, and painting by independent artists.
In the middle of it all, a mansion in the same location as the hotel is currently on the market for £1,650,000.

That home is one of a cluster of modernist residences on the island known as Aquarius, all of which were erected in 1975.
The concept was designed by architect Bo Gunnar Robert Stille, who was tasked with creating a Scandi-style residence that took advantage of the riverbank location.

Take a trip from Twickenham across the bridges, down the path, past Richmond Rowing Club, and into the front yard of the house to be met with the entry hall.
A guest bathroom with a Barbican sink is on one side, while a nice home office with a huge window overlooking the shared gardens is on the other.

On this floor, there are two additional double bedrooms as well as a family bathroom with a beautiful tub.
From the five-finger wood parquet floor to the full-height folding glass doors that open out to the garden, everything is bright, airy, and contemporary.
That garden is also wonderful, with a terrace that leads down to a grass and views of the Ham marshes across the sea.

If you want to, you may even anchor your own boat at the end of the lawn (and can get planning permission for a pontoon and a licence from the Port of London Authority).
It’s a wonderful setting for anybody looking for a break from London while still being technically in the city, with 1,511 sq ft of interior space.
Don’t be too concerned about being stuck on an island in the middle of the Thames from a geographical standpoint.

The heart of Twickenham, with its shops and cafés, is only a short walk away, and Twickenham Rowing Club members have access to rowing boats as well as a huge gym.

By the river, you can simply wander about and see Ham House, Marble Hill Park, and other sights, or if you need to travel somewhere more central, Twickenham station is just a 10-minute walk away. You can go to Waterloo in less half an hour from there.
