The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat battled for a chance at the NBA championship, with Kevin Garnett playing his last game in Boston. Where does Ray Allen’s performance rank among other memorable big man performances?

Ray Allen was a key player in the Celtics’ victory over the Lakers on March 10, 2008. When asked about his role, he replied “I’m just trying to be big man on Kevin Garnett’s big day.”

Ray Allen Played the Role of Big Man on Kevin Garnett's Big Day

During his 18 years in the NBA, Ray Allen, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was noted for his prodigious outside shooting. His long-range shooting instantly helped the Boston Celtics win a championship after he was acquired in a 2007 trade.

Allen formed Boston’s biggest Big Three since the Larry Bird era alongside NBA All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Allen performed the role of the big man in a room full of current and past basketball players honoring Garnett on Sunday.

When Ray Allen departed the Boston Celtics in free agency, he rubbed his former teammates the wrong way.

Allen’s departure from the Celtics following the 2011-12 season was terrible enough for certain Celtics players. The greater concern was where he ended up.

After winning the NBA title in their first year together in 2008, Allen, Garnett, and Pierce returned to the Finals in 2010, but were defeated in seven games by the Los Angeles Lakers. The Miami Heat knocked Boston out of the conference semi-finals in 2011 and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2012.

Allen turned down a return to the Celtics in 2012, opting instead to join the Heat. In 2013, he was instrumental in Miami’s title victory. His teammates, especially Garnett, Pierce, and point guard Rajon Rondo, were not pleased with his decision to leave Boston.

Allen said he had no quarrel with his Celtics teammates, but Garnett looked to be the most disturbed and appeared to have a long-standing animosity.

“I’ve been quite outspoken about my dislike for what Ray did, and that was genuine for everyone involved,” Garnett told The Boston Globe in 2020. “That’s how it is in real life.” We were having a major feud with Miami at the time, and it was very comparable to a player switching from the Lakers to the Celtics and vice versa. No one wants to talk about the details, but it was a genuine thing. Miami and Boston are two cities in the United States. That was the genuine deal.”

Kevin Garnett’s jersey was retired in a ceremony attended by Ray Allen.

Pierce said in September that he had put whatever resentment he had against Allen’s decision to leave town behind him. He did note that Garnett and Rondo didn’t seem to have done the same. Garnett may be getting there, he claimed, but Rondo was still not satisfied.

“KG, as he grows older, he’s less obstinate,” Pierce remarked. according to Sports Illustrated

Rondo, how about you?

“That’s an issue,” Pierce replied. “Rondo, he’s still a thorn in my side.”

If there was ever a genuine dispute between Garnett and Allen, it seems to have been resolved. Despite rumors that Garnett was still unhappy with Allen, Allen played the big man on Sunday, attending Garnett’s big day as his jersey was sent to the rafters, where it joined the jerseys of numerous other Celtics icons.

Allen, who was seated in the front row throughout the ceremony, was called out by Garnett.

According to ESPN, Garnett stated, “It’s fantastic to have Ray Allen here.” “This is real s***. It’s great to see you again, dude. “You’re up next, puppy.”

When Allen joined Garnett in an embrace, the TD Garden crowd roared. Pierce suddenly emerged from the throng, and the three of them hugged each other in a bearhug.

Allen took that important step to help heal the fences.

Many inside TD Garden, including Doc Rivers, who coached the 2008 championship team, were made happy by Allen’s presence.

“That’s a huge one,” Rivers agreed. “Because that’s clearly been an issue, and the fact that the fence seems to be coming down is pretty fantastic.” I’m ecstatic for Kevin, and it’s fantastic that Ray showed here today.”

It’s been difficult for Allen to connect with the teammates with whom he won the championship. He was delighted to be a part of Garnett’s special day.

Allen said, “I don’t enjoy being on the outside.” “There are so many individuals here that I adore and have spent time with… those people are imprinted in my memory when it comes to my time here in Boston, and not being able to connect with them was always a struggle for me.”

“Just because I moved away doesn’t imply that connection or relationship is over. So everything centered on Kevin and myself, since I got the impression that everyone here felt the same way Kevin did. When he welcomed me, the rest of the world did as well. That was my impression. “I’m delighted we were able to accomplish it so that people could see, ‘We won with this man in 2008, and that’s what counts.’”
