On Tuesday, the first round of the College Football Playoff rankings were released, and the annual poll seemed to encourage teams all around the nation — just not the ones you would expect.

Underdogs took over college football in Week 10 with shocks, near calls, and formerly unbeaten records shattering as underdogs took over the sport.

Purdue stunned the college football world for the second time this season, defeating No. 3 Michigan State 40-29, while Wake Forest’s undefeated start to the season came to an end with a 58-55 loss at North Carolina, bringing the team’s record to 8-0.

Other top-10 teams were fortunate to dodge upset attempts from rivals, as Alabama escaped LSU with nothing to lose, 20-14, and Cincinnati held off Tulsa, 28-20, to stay unbeaten.

Oregon also overcame a shaky first half to defeat Washington and secure its status in the CFP rankings for the time being. Other ranked teams were not as fortunate. Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Minnesota all fell to unranked opponents this week, causing the Power Rankings to scramble in the most significant way of the season.

With the results in hand and the next round of CFP rankings just around the corner, now is the ideal moment to review this week’s Power Rankings.

JT Daniels, the No. 1 quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, has returned to action, but not as the starter. Stetson Bennett, a former walk-on, started for the sixth consecutive game, guiding Georgia to a 43-6 victory against Missouri at home. Bennett threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns on 13 of 19 passing attempts. He’s now 9-2 as a starter, including a 6-0 record this season. Daniels made his first appearance in five games after suffering a lat muscle injury more than a month ago. On 7-for-11 throwing, he passed for 82 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Bulldogs racked up 505 total yards of offense, including 377 via the air. Jermaine Burton, a sophomore receiver who has been hindered by injuries this season, had a strong day with three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

“I believe Missouri came into this game with the intention of not allowing us to run the ball,” Bennett said. “They were popping backers and had low safeties, all in an attempt to halt our run game. When they do that, we need to be a force to be reckoned with. That is how we get points if they don’t.” Schlabach, Mark

Alabama’s 20-14 triumph against LSU on Saturday night was everything but picturesque. Penalties and failed blocks plagued the offensive line. Bryce Young, the quarterback, was sacked four times, while Brian Robinson Jr., the running back, carried for just 18 yards on 12 rushes. Early in the game, the defense allowed too many huge plays, giving life to a depleted opponent. Rather than making fast work of a club they were predicted to defeat by four touchdowns, the Crimson Tide allowed the Tigers to stay around until the very end, winning only when a Hail Mary attempt fell short with no time left. Alex Scarborough’s remark

The Bearcats aren’t scoring style points, but they continue to win. They needed two goal-line saves in the waning minutes of Saturday’s game to defeat Tulsa 28-20 and stay unblemished at home. Cincinnati surged out to a 14-0 lead early in the third quarter and seemed to have a comfortable advantage. However, the Bearcats struggled to stop the run (allowing 297 yards) and had to make major stops late in the game with their backs to the goal line to win. Chris Low (c)

This season, the No. 4 squad in the nation has had its fair number of near calls. But could it accomplish it on a wet night in Stok—ehh, Seattle, to avoid another tight game? Washington was obviously determined to put an end to the bizarre verbal sparring that had occurred between head coach Jimmy Lake and Oregon during the previous week. But, by the midway point of Saturday’s game, whatever gasoline Lake’s remarks had supplied had run out. After being restricted to three points for the most of the first half, Oregon learned that the key to winning was to just run the ball over and over (329 total running yards) and stay away from any Pac-12 late-game hijinks that might have destroyed its season. The Ducks’ final score of 26-16 is nothing to write home about, but being one of the top four teams in the standings from the first week means all they have to do now is keep winning. In a 26-17 victory against Nebraska, quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 405 yards and two touchdowns, but the Buckeyes’ offense was fragmented, which will be a persistent worry as the season progresses. Ohio State’s rushing offense did not get going until late in the game. TreVeyon Henderson was restricted to only 92 yards on the day, and the Buckeyes settled for far too many field goals, four of which were the game-winners. The sustained progress on defense, which has made tremendous improvements since the defeat to Oregon, is perhaps the brightest point. Nebraska managed just 361 total yards and was 2-of-13 on third down. Andrea Adelson’s remark

After being ranked No. 8 in the original College Football Playoff rankings, the Sooners enjoyed a bye week. It’s a bitter pill to take for a team that has won 17 games in a row, but the Sooners understand that this season is all that matters. OU was able to take some time off this week to watch Baylor’s next opponent, TCU, surrender 461 passing yards and 70 running yards to first-year starter Chandler Morris. Dave Wilson is an author.

The Spartans entered the game against Purdue with an 8-0 record and a chance to play in the College Football Playoff at the conclusion of the season. The Spartans fell to the Boilermakers 40-29 after an emotional and hard-fought battle versus Michigan. Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell passed for 536 yards, the fifth-most in Big Ten history in a single game. Michigan State made a late comeback attempt, but O’Connell and Purdue’s offense were too strong. In the defeat, Michigan State’s running back Kenneth Walker III was restricted to 136 yards and one score, and the Spartans must now pick up the pieces if they want to win the conference. In a 34-6 victory, the Irish limited Navy to only 184 total yards. Navy had just 166 running yards, while Notre Dame had 430 total yards, including 269 through the air from Jack Coan. Notre Dame improved to 8-1 in the season, with the lone defeat coming to Cincinnati, thanks to Kyren Williams’ two touchdown runs. In what turned out to be an Irish blowout, receiver Kevin Austin Jr. recorded 139 receiving yards and a score. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)

Michigan rebounded from its setback to Michigan State with a 29-7 victory against Indiana at home to get back on track before of a difficult final stretch of the season. Indiana was held to just 195 total yards of offense and one score by Michigan’s defense. Hassan Haskins took over when Michigan running back Blake Corum left the game with an apparent leg injury. Hassan Haskins had 162 rushing yards on 25 touches (a career best) and one score. Indiana had injuries all over the field, but Michigan needed this victory since Penn State and Ohio State are both coming up in the next three weeks. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)

No offensive touchdowns were scored, as the starting quarterbacks combined to complete just 50% of their passes. In Texas A&M’s triumph against Auburn, there were aspects of an all-defense struggle, but the greater team was never in doubt. The Aggies outgained Auburn by 6.4 yards per play, with Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane rushing 31 times for 210 yards. After halftime, A&M outscored the Tigers 17-0 to win 20-3, and the only reason it was close was because the Aggies had to settle for five field goal tries. In the third quarter, quarterback Zach Calzada seemed to suffer a serious shoulder injury, but he recovered to complete the game. Bill Connelly’s quote

Oklahoma State has been winning with defense all year, but on Saturday in Morgantown, the Cowboys created a defensive masterpiece. In a 24-3 win, they sacked West Virginia quarterbacks eight times and surrendered just 2.3 yards per play. WVU didn’t break 100 yards in total until the fourth quarter, and when they did, OSU swiftly intercepted a ball. Spencer Sanders of the Cowboys tossed two touchdown passes to Tay Martin and completed 21 of 31 passes total, which was all the offense the Pokes needed. This squad has embraced victory in all its forms, and West Virginia was no exception. Bill Connelly’s quote

After entering at No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings with an 8-0 record, Wake Forest was expecting to get into the top four. However, a setback to North Carolina this week undermined those aspirations, as the Demon Deacons were defeated 58-55 by the Tar Heels. Wake led 31-24 at halftime and saw many lead changes in this back-and-forth affair. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 398 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 78 yards and two scores. The 55 points were not enough to defeat North Carolina’s running attack, which produced 336 yards and six touchdowns, four of which were scored by Ty Chandler. Wake Forest still has NC State, Clemson, and Boston College to play for the remainder of the season, despite the one setback. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)

Lane Kiffin’s Rebels kept Liberty at bay and cruised 27-14. It wasn’t as simple as it seemed as they rolled to a 24-0 halftime lead. With an ailing ankle and no regulars on the offensive line or receiving corps, quarterback Matt Corral completed 20 of 27 throws for 324 yards and a touchdown. The Rebels took an early lead thanks to two early Jerrion Ealy touchdown runs, one of which came from 70 yards out. Three interceptions stopped the game from being too close, even though Malik Willis and the Liberty offense ultimately gained some traction. Former head coach Hugh Freeze and his Flames were defeated by the Rebels. — Connelly, Bill

It’s not out of the question that the highest-ranked club in Texas will be based in San Antonio at the conclusion of the season. After being rejected by the College Football Playoff selection committee in the first rankings on Tuesday, UTSA put up another spectacular performance, defeating UTEP 44-23 to strengthen its case for a top-25 place. On 21 carries, Sincere McCormick gained 169 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. Kyle Bonagura (Kyle Bonagura)

Houston flirted with catastrophe a week after entering the rankings, giving up two 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns to upset-minded USF. The Cougars’ offense, on the other hand, is running smoothly. Clayton Tune (21-of-26 for 385 yards and three touchdowns), two 100-yard rushers (Ta’Zhawn Henry had a 97-yard touchdown run and finished with 130 yards on 10 carries, and Alton McCaskill added 125 yards on 22 carries), and Nathaniel Dell caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown led the Bulls to victory. Sure, the defense is a worry, but on most days, 647 total yards will suffice. Dave Wilson is an author.

The Cougars received a big lift from the playoff committee on Tuesday, putting them in the top 15, and they reacted appropriately on Saturday. They didn’t waste any time in putting the game away early against 1-6 Idaho State. They went up 35-0 after scoring touchdowns on their opening five drives in barely a quarter and a half. BYU had over 1,000 total yards on offense by the time the game ended with a 59-14 final score, while the defense forced 10 punts and two turnovers while allowing Idaho State to convert just one of 12 third-down attempts. With a few teams falling ahead of them, a strong victory like this one will almost certainly keep the Cougars climbing the standings. Paolo Uggetti (Paolo Uggetti)

The Panthers regrouped and pushed away behind quarterback Kenny Pickett after doing some Pitt-like things early on against Duke. The senior quarterback threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first Pitt quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in consecutive seasons. With his 14th game of 300 passing yards or more, Pickett matched Alex Van Pelt’s franchise record. Pitt took control with a 23-point second quarter, rushing for 220 yards and three touchdowns against a feeble Duke defense. For the first time since 1905, the Panthers have scored 50 points or more four times in the same season. They are still in first place in the ACC’s Coastal Division as they enter their most crucial stretch of the season. Adam Rittenberg’s remark

The Bears were hammered by an emotional TCU squad that was playing without Gary Patterson for the first time in 21 years. Despite having just one scholarship running back, Baylor’s defense was destroyed by first-year starter Chandler Morris, who racked up 531 yards of total offense. Gerry Bohanon’s two interceptions were another cause for worry, as he now has five picks in the last three games after throwing none in the first six. TCU has now defeated Baylor in six of their last seven games. Dave Wilson is an author.

Devin Leary, the Wolfpack’s quarterback, has been instrumental in the team’s 7-2 start. Leary passed for 314 yards and four touchdowns against Florida State, becoming the first NC State quarterback to throw for 300 yards and four touchdowns in consecutive games since Russell Wilson in 2009. The NC State defense, which had been outstanding for much of the season, limited the ACC’s No. 2 rushing attack to just 38 yards on the ground. This is the first time NC State has defeated both Clemson and Florida State in the same season since 2002. That was also the Wolfpack’s final 11-win campaign. Andrea Adelson’s remark

It wasn’t nice, but Iowa earned a conference victory. It had all the hallmarks of a Hawkeye win this season, with the exception that backup quarterback Alex Padilla came in and led three touchdown drives. Iowa led Northwestern 14-3 at halftime and overcame a 9-3 deficit in the last two quarters to win 17-12 in Evanston, thanks to a dominating defense and just enough scores early on. Despite the win, Iowa is on the outside looking in in the West Division of the Big Ten following a pair of key conference defeats. Shea Carlson is a writer.

The Chanticleers defeated struggling Georgia Southern 28-8 despite the absence of standout quarterback Grayson McCall. McCall was declared out indefinitely before the game due to an upper-body ailment, according to the school. Bryce Carpenter, his replacement, passed for just 85 yards, but they didn’t need much from the passing game since Carpenter (44 yards), Shermari Jones (96 yards), and Braydon Bennett (78 yards) were all productive on the ground. Georgia Southern was held to 233 yards of total offense and four turnovers by the Chanticleers. Kyle Bonagura (Kyle Bonagura)

The Badgers’ 1-3 start continues to fade into the background as the Big Ten West Division championship draws closer. Wisconsin used an increasingly familiar recipe to put Rutgers away before halftime on the road, combining a smothering defense with a run-oriented attack. With three first-half takeaways, including a Caesar Williams interception return for a score, the Badgers continue to improve their turnover margin. Freshman Braelon Allen rushed for another 100 yards, while quarterback Graham Mertz threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns, his finest game of the season. Wisconsin had a great day, extending its win streak to five games, despite a leg injury to running back Chez Mellusi. Adam Rittenberg’s remark

Auburn’s Bo Nix had a bad day in a 20-3 defeat against Texas A&M after two consecutive outstanding outings. Nix completed 20 of 41 passes for 153 yards against a solid Aggies defense, was intercepted, sacked four times, and had a fumble that was retrieved for the game’s lone score. Tank Bigsby rushed for just 69 yards on 15 runs, and the Tigers only managed one more drive inside the Aggies’ 40 yard line following an early field goal drive. After halftime, they were behind 17-0. Auburn’s dreadful performance has effectively eliminated the Tigers from contention in the SEC West. Bill Connelly’s quote

The final score of 52-7 correctly reflects Utah’s dominance against Stanford, but it might have been much worse. Utah led 38-0 at halftime, in one of the most dominating halves of football played this season by any team in college football. In the first half, the Utes rushed for 336 yards and outgained the Cardinal 440-28. It was just the third time a Power 5 team has been outgained by 400 yards or more in a half since 2004, and the first since 2013. Tavion Thomas, Micah Bernard, and TJ Pledger all rushed for more than 100 yards. Kyle Bonagura (Kyle Bonagura)

At Maryland, the Nittany Lions snapped a three-game losing run, overcoming a poor offensive start to pull away in the second half. Penn State relied on Sean Clifford’s passing, Jahan Dotson’s receiving, and outstanding red zone defense to win. Clifford threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns, connecting 11 times with Dotson for 242 yards and three scores. Although neither team rushed the ball efficiently, Penn State converted 10 of 18 third-down situations. With fewer than three minutes remaining, Lions cornerback Ji’Ayir Brown secured the victory with an 87-yard interception return for a score. Adam Rittenberg’s remark
