Every week, we sit down and discuss a topic on the blog. This week, we’re doing a bit of an experiment. I’ve asked my regulars to give me their four mobile games they predict will be huge hits once they’ve been on the market a little while. I’m not going to tell you which games they picked, but what I will say is that their selections are either major surprises or game-changing releases.

There are an endless number of mobile games currently available, and as technology improves, we expect the value of those games to increase. In this post, I’m going to share my predictions on 4 games that will be big hits in 2016.

It’s hard to predict which mobile games will be huge hits, but we’ll give it a try anyway.

It’s hard to predict which mobile games will sell well. Who would have thought that a game as unusual as Clash Of Clans would take the world by storm? Or that of all the online games adapted for mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies will become world famous? We’re never sure what to expect. But a complex perspective is not impossible, so there’s nothing wrong with trying to predict a future success…..

1. Mario Kart Tour

Mario has already ventured into the mobile market twice and the results have been mixed. Super Mario Run committed the cardinal sin of not going free-to-play, which immediately reduced its potential user base and was therefore only moderately successful. Mario World, meanwhile, went the free-to-play route, but suffered from a surprising lack of publicity (and the Dr. Mario series is not a strong brand in the Mario universe).

Despite all their intricacies, both games somehow lacked their advantages. But we think it will be a Mario Kart Tour game after all. The Mario Kart franchise is incredibly popular, it has always been one of the best-selling games on Nintendo systems, and as a free-to-play mobile game it would be an almost certain success. Let’s hope Nintendo does.

2. Stars

Online gambling has recently gained renewed interest, partly due to improved technology and partly due to the evolution (one might even say, increasingly lax) of online gambling laws. And with these games making their way into the huge US market (through New Jersey for now, but other states will follow), there’s no reason to expect anything other than an app boom. This will likely include many different games over time, but Stars is a long-established company and is already one of the top sites in New Jersey. In app form, with a US player base, Stars will most likely be a success and could even become an important option for fans of mobile games.

3. Minecraft Earth

This is an announced augmented reality mobile game, and frankly, the biggest surprise will be that it won’t be a hit. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time, and combining its low-resolution digging and building DNA with the immersive real-world experience of Pokémon Go is perhaps the closest thing to catching lightning in a bottle. The ability to use virtual elements in augmented reality to build structures around the world is an exciting idea in itself, and more than justifies the idea of this game. Add to that the ability to collect resources and virtual creatures from the Minecraft bestiary, and the game truly becomes a game that can print money. Not to mention that it will be even more impressive when played through AR glasses with mobile connectivity.

4. Legends of Apex

We’ve seen two other high-profile battle royale games, PUBG and Fortnite, become incredibly successful in the mobile market. So we’d be surprised if Apex Legends, EA’s latest product in this burgeoning genre, doesn’t take the plunge sooner than expected. Given its strong player base and consistent daily performance on Twitch, Apex Legends has it in it to become a giant, and that should translate quite easily to mobile devices. It may not be as secure as Minecraft Earth, but we’re betting on it anyway. If you are a gamer, you’ve likely already heard of the highly popular and successful Pokemon Go, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other awesome games out there.  Last year’s smash hit, Clash Royale, has already become the world’s third most-played game, with more than 100 million downloads.  And there are a lot of other new entries this year, including the game that started it all: Candy Crush Saga..
